1 " Well, we would have ignored itbut for the incredible hype in the press release: 'Entirely NewConcept'- 'Where Valhalla and the Hobbit left off'- 'Excellentvalue'- At `14.95? Good Grief!":
1 " Well known for insisting on noviolence in his products, Mel Croucher has nevertheless intro-duced some ugly and disturbing images into this program.":
1 " To use the Original data you must first reset the computer, LOAD JSW, and SAVE just the datapart. Then LOAD this program again, but play the JSW data forthe second load instead of the data we have provided."
1 " This one ought to keep you outof trouble. The idea is to hack into a bank's computer and move millions of dollars to a friendsaccount, but it's not illegal. This is synthetic hacking, a computer puzzle rather than a computer crime."
1 " There is another hacker who phones you with helpful messagesfrom time to time, and you get one useful telephone number to start off with.":
1 " The program is written almost entirely in BASIC, but this is OK as there is no action as suchto be slowed down. It does meansthough, that real hackers can bust into the program instead ofthe bank without much trouble."
1 " The obligatory crummy single on the back of the tape has be- come a synchronized game sound track with a musical cast of hundreds. Both sound and game turn over for the second half ofthe program. For once Automata'susual high price is not complet-ely unjustifiable."
1 " The keyboard controls are verycomplicated, because of the needfor 'pick-up', 'drop', and 'use'controls for the objects as wellas the usual movement keys.":
1 " The game itself is in two parts that can be loaded separ- ately. The second part is a siege strategy game with graphicscreens as in our snapshot. The first part is a text adventure with two arcade sequences."
1 " The book and map are meant to aid you in recruiting troops in the adventure that can then be loaded into the siege game. I didn't go as far as that, as thewhole package excited intense disinterest in me before I got that far. They do say that good things come in small packages.":
1 " The arcade sequences are best described as pedestrian, and thesiege program is slow, obviouslywritten in BASIC, and less ani- mated than the snap makes it ap-pear. You may well wonder why weare reviewing it at all."
1 " The adventure uses a multiple choice, pick-from-a-list input system. This spoils it as an ad-venture for me, though I can't quite put my finger on why. On top of that, the first time I chose to attack (a librarian) I got told off for being a bully and the computer NEWed itself!"
1 " Rat droppings, foetuses, and Defect Police feature in the theme that unites a series of arcade games in which you try toassist the fertilization and so on of an embryo, chivying along its cellular activity and hidingit from the prying eyes in the interrogation tank."
1 " Probably for the same reason there is no joystick provision. The complicated keyboard controlscheme makes fast play difficultbut this problem goes with the complex array of options in playand I can't think how else they could have arranged things."
1 " Nice touches, like realistic dialing noises, abound. My own (entirely innocent!) use of mod-em communications leads me to believe that the game's author has been into a lot of places heperhaps shouldn't have, such is the extent of the realism."
1 " Micromega's 'custom' loader routine is apparently not a fastloader. It sounds like it loads in chunks at several different speeds, but the overall rate is about the same as normal loadingso it must be just for security. Our copy loaded reliably.":
1 " Less fragile personalities maywish to know that Kempston and Interface 2 joysticks work.":
1 " Legend gets this years prize for the largest box around a Spectrum game. It looks like twoSpectrums would fit in it, but it actually contains a tape, a map, and a large paperback book."
1 " Jasper is a well animated rat who has to be guided past other animals possessing equally real-istic movement. He can duck as well as jump, and can carry up to five objects at a time for use at the appropriate moment."
1 " JSW Editor by Mark Jeffries"''" This program can be used to change the graphics and rooms inJet Set Willy. This data can then be loaded back in to the JSW game to give you an entirelydifferent game!"
1 " It's all very well done, and playable enough, so why am I so depressed? Well, _1984_ was a great book, a literary landmark, but I didn't actually enjoy my- self reading it, did you? DEUS is impressive and has something to say about the future of soft-ware, but it isn't much fun. Theimagery is too unhappy."
1 " If you don't take control im- mediately the program goes into demo mode and you get a look at all the screens. There is also a single, un-initialed hi-score feature."
1 " If this one doesn't get you going (I suppose there are stillsome boringly normal people about) then you'll just have to try sub-aqua hang-gliding or, (gasp!) maybe even the real thing. Watch that phone bill!":
1 " Cartoon graphics distinguish this program from the hordes of other arcade adventures. There are 22 screens, less than JSW, but the scenery is much more de-tailed. The adventure element isvery important, and planning your route and having the right objects are as necessary for success as fast finger work."
1 " Automata were there at the be-ginning and have grown with the industry, warts and all. This istheir latest flower, and there is a lot of it, what with two cassettes, a poster, and a host of famous names. No, not him, real famous people."
1 " Although you are not really connected to the telephone, of course, the computer acts much as if you are using an auto-dialmodem to phone up databases and guess their passwords. There areuniversity and commercial data- bases to hack, and even a mini- Prestel!"
   1 " (But don't trust to it) "
